I believe in the power of singing — it energizes us, uplifts us, and it’s an incredible force for connection. Which is why I can’t stand the thought of someone being cut off from it just because they have the mistaken belief that they “can’t” sing.

The truth is, if you can talk, you can sing.

Singing is a natural way that humans express themselves. You can see this really easily with little kids — they don’t think about singing, they just do it. It’s a simple, easy, and most of all, it’s fun! Since they haven’t learned to take themselves so seriously yet, they can just let loose and enjoy the sensation of singing.

That potential is always there in everyone, you included.

OK, so it’s been a long time since you were a kid. Since then you may have been told that you’re just not good at singing, that you should stick to singing in the shower, or that you just don’t have the talent. This is completely untrue! You don’t have to be a classically trained singer or have some magical special talent to sing — it’s something that you’re naturally set up to do.

And you probably don’t realize it … but you’re already doing things that singers do.

Even if you think that you can’t carry a tune in a bucket, you’re already unconsciously doing many of the things you need to be able to do to sing. When you speak, your voice naturally goes through a range of tones, just like you do when singing. You unconsciously time your breaths to fit into the flow of your speech. And whether you realize it or not, you moderate your voice to complement the people around you, just like you do when singing with other people.

That’s what Sing Portland! is all about — giving EVERYONE a chance to express themselves through song. (And have loads of fun doing it.)

We’re not about being perfect, we’re about having fun. That’s one of the reasons that we never have auditions — we know that we don’t need to test someone out before they join us, because the way we do it, everybody can join in. So if you think that you might like to give us a try, but secretly think that you might be the one person who’s just too tone deaf to join in, you don’t have to worry any more. You’re more than welcome here.

Can’t wait to sing with you!
