Pop PDX was born after we performed at Carnegie Hall by invitation. Sing Portland! had been in existence for 6 years. We were joyfully singing indie folk music, gospel and spirituals, an occasional jazz tune and pop song… It’s that occasional pop song that got DCINY’s attention.
In the summer of 2018, DCINY invited us to be part of Total Vocal – an a cappella extravaganza under the direction of Deke Sharon with 500 singers from around the world. We sang contemporary, popular songs: Don’t stop me now by Queen, Club at the end of the street by Elton. John, Remember me from Coco, Defying Gravity from Wicked. We worked hard. We had a blast. And we sang in a sold-out Carnegie Hall.
Singers wanted to keep singing popular songs and thus Pop PDX was born.
Pop PDX is where you get to sing the songs you already know and love. Dan Cooper leads this class and he is a master teacher of the popular repertoire. The approach is the same: no audition. no sheet music. The class includes practice tracks and your audio recordings will be edited into a choral recording so you truly sing with all your classmates. Loads of fun with your favorite songs from the 70s, 80s 90s and 21st century.
Class take place every Friday at 12 noon PDT, will be an hour long, and take place via zoom.
By the way – now that we’ve performed in Carnegie Hall, we’re part of the DCINY (Distinguished Concerts International New York) family and are welcome to return to Carnegie Hall anytime. You may find yourself singing in NYC one day…
